Baisakhi 2009
Indian Community Center of Garden State (ICC-GS) celebrated Baisakhi on May 9th, 2009 at the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Flanders.
This was a celebration of Bengali New Year 1416 as well as an occasion
to pay tribute to the great poets of Bengal. 9th May was also 25th Baisakh, 148th birthday of Kaviguru Rabindranath
Thakur. The cultural program of the day featured many of his unforgettable creations. The events of the day started at
4PM with 'adda' over 'cha' and 'muri makha'. The
started at 5:45 PM and continued till 8:15 PM. Highlights of the program are
- Kavi Pranam : Recitation of 'Sonar Tari', Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Geeti.
- Children’s 'Jemon Khushi Sajo' : ICC children came dressed as various personalities and performed accordingly.
- Riturongo : A dance recital celebrating six seasons of Bengal based on Rabindra Sangeet.
- Variety dance by 'Jhumur' group.
- Majestic Nights : A bilingual presentation of love poems of Bengali women.
- Aami Banglar Gaan Gai : Bengali folk songs by choir 'Oikataan'
As always it all ended with a sumptuous dinner comprising of rice, 'daal', chicken curry, 'bandhakopi', 'chutney', 'doi' and 'misti'.
Saraswati Puja 2009
On Saturday, January 31, 2009, Indian Community Center of Garden State (ICC-GS) celebrated its Saraswati Puja
under the newly appointed successors of ICC, stewarded by the president Prabir Sarkar. It was a great success in
terms of children participation, the size of audience, and exquisite presentation of cultural programs.
The event was held at the Eisenhower Middle School, Succasunna, NJ, starting at about 1:00 P.M. Aided by the members
of Puja committee, the rituals were performed by Salilesh Mukhopadhyay, followed by 'Haate Khari' and 'Pushpanjali'.
The afternoon witnessed a galaxy of beautiful children participating in Arts and Quiz contests. The started in the auditorium at 4 PM. In the first part community members took part in various presentations like
'Saraswati Bandana', 'Phule Phule', a dance to the tune of RabidraSangeet, 'Gondho-Bichar', a skit based on Sukumar Ray’s poem,
and 'Basanta Utsav', a solo dance program celebrating the Spring season. Dance group Rhythms of Dance and Music presented a creative eulogy
'Anjoli Loho Mor Sangeete' to Debi Saraswati through interesting genre of dance. The main attraction of the evening was the music program
titled 'Ananda Lahari'. This was a program that included melodious songs from the past to the present. The featured artist was Santoneel Dhar
from New York. Accompanying Santoneel were few of ICC members and a talented set of musicians playing Tabla, Octopad, Guitar and Keyboard.
The event ended in a sumptuous dinner with traditional 'khichuri', 'begun bhaja', 'bandhakopi', 'chutney' and 'malpoa'.
